Sudan’s Civil War: 10 Months into the Conflict

Sudan has been suffering through a civil war for more than 10 months now. Over 6.3 million people have been displaced, both internally and externally, and are now seeking refuge in neighboring countries. As the conflict continues, there is concern about the capacity of neighboring countries to accept refugees on such a large scale.

RESEARCH FOCUS: THE COURSE OF CONFLICT

Conflict, no matter its form, is closely intertwined with human rights and development. It may often be thought of as a bringer of destruction, as in cases of war, violence, and extremism — but conflict can also be a bringer of change. A tool, so to speak, for the oppressed to begin a revolution toward a more equal future. Looking at conflict as a multidimensional concept is the foundation of our study of human rights and development. The various manifestations and consequences of conflict in its before, its midst, and its after; the different ways conflict can build up and break down stages of development; and the many orientations of conflict on the spectrum of driving change to enforcing oppression will here be analyzed to develop a greater understanding of human rights and development in a world powered by conflict.
